A RESOURCE CENTRED APPROACH

Johnella Bird is a counselling practitioner and co-director of The Family Therapy Centre in Auckland, New Zealand. She consults to and facilitates teaching programs for mental health practitioners, social workers, psychiatrists, counsellors, psychologists and nurses throughout Europe, Canada, the United States, Australia and New Zealand. Johnella's second book, Talk that Sings: Therapy in a New Linguistic Key, was released in April 2004.

TALK THAT SINGS: EXTENDING THE

NARRATIVE TRADITION

June 26th, 27th, 29th & 30th, 2006 9.30 AM - 4.30 PM

We can read about 'treatment approaches' for people suffering from 'post traumatic stress disorder' or depression, or anorexia, or anxiety states, however therapeutic conversations rarely reflect these descriptions. Consequently I am interested in answering these questions:

  • How do we use these approaches as guides while we make discovery with people (clients)?
  • How do we orientate the conversation toward finding peoples resources, strengths, abilities while incorporating their struggles, disappointments and despair?

Over these four days I'll answer these questions while demonstrating the following:

  • The positioning of people's experience within a contextual environment. I do this through an exploration of feelings, thoughts, experiences, actions., the body, relationships.
  • The development of people's resources through emphasising a relational style of listening and questioning.
  • The development of a style of enquiry which uses the imagination and time as a practical resource for change.
  • The development of the technical ability to use the therapeutic relationship as a site for discovery. This includes positioning ourselves to make discovery with people even in difficult circumstances where change seems illusive.
  • The situating of respect and collaboration as a living practice that is negotiated within class, cultural, gender and sexuality relationships.
  • The development of change-making practices in order to support discoveries in and outside of sessions. This includes letter-writing.

Note: If we have limited registrations we cancel one month before the date of the workshop. This is due to overseas and out of town registrations

Cost: $595.00 (GST included)

WHAT THE BLEEP IS GOING WRONG!

July 6th, 2006 9.30 AM - 4.30 PM

Many of us struggle with the sense that something is wrong in our lives. When we search for an explanation for this we are often drawn to an investigation of our-selves. We pursue this investigation using a criteria which we are often unaware of. This criteria tends to disappear under the guise of 'this is normal'. Those experiences that either sit outside of what is considered 'normal' or are in some way different to generalised acceptable versions of self-hood raise the question, 'Perhaps I am not normal'. Sometimes the experience 'I'm not normal', is so pervasive that every interchange and every relationship is judged through these self-measures such as, 'I'm not good enough,' or 'I'm not going to measure up'. The 'I'm not normal' position is frequently felt as a deficit, something to be hidden or ashamed of.

In this workshop I will introduce you to a therapeutic practice where people discover a process for answering this question 'Am I good enough?'

Note: If we have limited registrations we cancel one month before the date of the workshop. This is due to overseas and out of town registrations.

Cost: $160.00 (GST included)

SEX TALK

July 13th & 14th, 2006 9.30 AM - 4.30 PM

In this workshop we will be reflecting on how we negotiate and discover the meanings people make of their relationship with their body and their relationship to the sexual relationship. There will be a focus on 'reconstructing desire', 'taking opportunities for closeness' and 'reclaiming the body'.

In this workshop, we will practice exposing the influences that are shaping of the meaning people (clients) make of sexual thoughts, feelings and experiences. Once these influences are apparent to us (therapist and client) will then experiment with alternative meanings and practices. This workshop does not address the mechanics of sexual functioning.

Note: If we have limited registrations we cancel one month before the date of the workshop. This is due to overseas and out of town registrations

Cost: $320.00 (GST included)

CONSTRUCTING THE NARRATIVE

IN SUPER-VISION

July 10th & 11th, 2006 9.30 AM - 4.30 PM

This 2 day workshop will focus on creating a reflective process in super-vision where 'sense' is made relationally and contextually. There will be an emphasis on the following:

  • The use of emotional experience as another knowledge resource.
  • The use of relational subjectivity to make sense of objective knowledges.
  • Encouraging a mindfulness in relationship to the experience of the therapeutic relationship.
  • The use of everyday language to negotiate the power relationship.
  • Discovery through the experiential.
  • The use of prismatic dialogue.

Throughout the two days I will demonstrate practical ways to experience extra-vision in super-vision. This workshop is relevant for people who facilitate the super-vision process.

Note: If we have limited registrations we cancel one month before the date of the workshop. This is due to overseas and out of town registrations.

Cost: $320.00 (GST included)

ADVANCING THERAPEUTIC CONVERSATIONS

Oct. 30th, 31st, Nov. 2nd & 3rd, 2006 9.30 AM - 4.30 PM

This workshop will appeal to people who are familiar with either of the books 'The Heart's Narrative' or 'Talk That sings'. I will discuss and demonstrate the practices I use to develop a contextual environment where change possibilities are made or constructed. These practices include the following:

  • Emphasising the process of discovery rather than static knowledges.
  • Moving the theoretical constructs held by the therapist into a living practice.
  • Exposing the binary positions that trap people (clients) and the therapy.
  • Negotiating and exploring the contradictory nature of gender, class, cultural, sexuality.
  • Extending the therapist's imaginative resource.
  • Negotiating ethical positions with people (clients). E.g. Therapeutic relationship boundaries.
  • Working with stuck places in the therapy.

The technical skills needed to conduct a resource centred interview will be emphasised through the use of video-tape, transcript and prismatic dialogue

Note: If we have limited registrations we cancel one month before the date of the workshop. This is due to overseas and out of town registrations.

Cost: $595.00 (GST included).
