Narrative Therapy: Responding to your questions Compiled by Shona Russell & Maggie Carey

How do you know what to externalise? How do you begin a re-authoring conversation? Why is it important for there to be witnesses to preferred stories and what are definitional ceremonies? When are you likely to engage in a re-membering conversation? What is poststructuralism and how is it relevant to the therapy world? What is the fit between feminism and some of the practices of narrative therapy? This book offers answers to these questions and many, many others! It also provides detailed examples of therapeutic conversations shaped by the narrative practices of externalising, re-membering, outsider witnessing and re-authoring. This book has been created from responses from therapists from Australia, New Zealand, Samoa, England, Canada, South Africa, Mexico and Austria, and therefore provides glimpses of therapeutic practice in many different parts of the world. If you are trying to engage with narrative practices in your therapy or community work then this easy-to-read and yet thorough and rigorous book has been created with you in mind. We recommend this book as the perfect companion to 'What is Narrative therapy: An easy-to-read introduction' by Alice Morgan.

Narrative Practice and Exotic Lives: Resurrecting diversity in everyday life By Michael White

In this new book by Michael White, amusing and powerfully moving transcripts of therapeutic conversations sit alongside wide-ranging explorations and explanations of narrative practice. The book opens with a previously unpublished chapter on Couple Therapy, a realm which is a common source of exasperation for many practitioners! This chapter explores the reasons for such frustration and importantly provides clues and ideas as to ways forward. This is followed in the second chapter by a lively depiction of the history and significance of journey metaphors in narrative therapy and how this work inevitably takes us to unexpected destinations.

Chapter three, "Folk psychology and narrative practice", links many of the practices of narrative therapy to an historical tradition of understanding life and identity that is at times referred to as "folk psychology". Through detailed descriptions of therapeutic conversations and thorough explorations of history and culture, this chapter represents a significant call for the reinstatement of folk psychology.

Chapter Four, "Narrative practice and the unpacking of identity conclusions", offers practitioners sparkling ways of deconstructing naturalistic accounts of life and identity and provides explanations as to why this is a vital element of many therapeutic conversations.

While the final chapter addresses the phenomenon of personal failure which has grown exponentially over recent decades. Never before has the sense of being a failure to be an adequate person been so freely available to people, and never before has it been so willingly and routinely dispensed. This chapter describes therapeutic options relevant to addressing this sense of personal failure and also describes in detail some of the operations of modern power that is associated with the dramatic growth of failure. Once again, descriptions of therapeutic conversations are woven throughout the text.
